Arcane 17 Presented in the Lower Gallery at The Seligmann Center takes its name and inspiration from the 1944 book Arcanum 17, written by Andre Breton with the help of fellow Surrealist and historian of Magic, Kurt Seligmann. While in exile from Europe during the final stages of World War Two, the text was written on a trip to Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec Canada. Inspired by the impermanence of Percé Rock juxtaposed with the global backdrop of a world war, Arcanum 17 conceives a spiritual revolution and resurrection of the society through women and metaphysical conceptions of femininity. In the spirit of this monumental text Arcane 17 will exhibit a presentation of Seligmann’s prints featured along side a selection of contemporary women artists, Chellis Baird, Nazli Efe, and Ophelia Arc.
